After succumbing to the Cops in the first 2 years of the challenge and with taunts of a “3 Peat” still ringing in our ears, this years squad led the race like a champion racehorse – from start to finish – coming away with a decisive 21.5 points to 12.5 victory to celebrate in style. This years side was certainly our strongest to date and a heartfelt thanks to all those who put their hands up to have a crack whether you made the squad or not. Next years dates will most likely be 22nd and 23rd of February subject to confirmation from Soldiers Point Bowling Club so for those who haven’t yet experienced a cracking 2 days of bowls and beers – reserve the dates for next years event and put in your nomination!
Day 1 – Morning Matches – In high humidity for all to enjoy😓 on the outdoor synthetic green we got off to a blazing start and took the Police by surprise in the 4’s. The Guns always have a strong team of 24 and are very hard to beat in any discipline with some outstanding bowlers in their side, however we went to the lunch break pretty happy after winning 4 games, drawing 1 and losing 1 to lead 4.5 points to 1.5. However history has shown not to go the early crow (who was absent this year) and we started the Triples that arvo keen to press home a good start.
Day 1 – Afternoon Games – The Triples meant that there was 8 points up for the taking in game 2. With all our teams slightly changed for the arvo, 2 of the lucky teams got to play undercover. When the smoke finally cleared we had picked up 6 wins to increase our lead of 3 out to 7 and led 10.5 points to 3.5. A rehydration debrief that afternoon followed by a team dinner with partners ensured a good nights rest with fingers crossed.
Day 2 – Morning Games – With a handy lead heading into the Pairs it was game on and as always possibly the luck of the draw. With a few substitutions occurring on our side due to absence and injury we needed not to worry as our bases were well covered. Needing 7 wins out of 12 games to ensure victory there were some rinks with blowouts and some neck and neck. Finally the last cards came in and we were HOME with the 17.5 points unbeatable to the Guns 8.5 points.
Day 2 – Afternoon BPL 3 bowl pairs with substitutions – 3 person teams, BPL format, 2 substitutions on each rink and it’s off to the races! With lots of laughter and comments and hydration stations at their busiest, Hoses had emptied all they had to vanquish the boys in blue 21.5 to 12.5 points after each club had shared the spoils 4 matches each.
Congratulations to all our players, terrific bowling to get the chocolates. Thanks to the subs who came in at short notice and a very special mention to our Head Selector Finno who chose the players, put them into great balanced sides for each event – and as you well know after all that – the rest is history and bragging rights for another 51 weeks!
